SNOW!!!!!!!!!

We have beautiful SNOW in Anchor Town this morning!
I could tell it was lighter outside when I woke up around 7 a.m. – the light coming in through the top window of my bedroom told me there was something different.  I went to get my camera and tried not to wake the boys.  This is the best shot I could get first thing in the morning without any coffee running through my veins:

IMG_9015

After I took this shot, I went to get Payton out of bed.  He is SO excited!  Much more than I am … I’m not ready for the change in weather … and it hit me this morning that I’m also sad …

This is a reminder that there is another season that Alan is missing.  The first snow also brings the reminder of the holidays ahead.  Each season is wonderful and new and fun … but also difficult.

…………………………………………….

Quite a bit has happened since my last post.  A birthday, colder temperatures, and more home improvements just to start.

I have taken a few photos, but I missed a wonderful opportunity on Monday, October 17th when everything inside the house was taped off.  I brought the boys home from school and we could barely get in the house!  The guys were ready to paint (and paint everything – walls and ceilings), so we left, but not before I had dad cut me a hole to get in Payton’s room so I could grab his basketball gear for practice.  That would have been a great shot!  I was in too much of a hurry … darnit.

Here are a few photos taken just a couple days before the tape off and huge spray day:

This is after paint and I’m starting to put things back together:

IMG_8994

I am so happy with all the work that’s been done!!  Dad is working on lots of little things right now, and I’m not ready to put stuff back up on the walls just yet … not sure what I want to put back up or where, so it can wait.  I think right now this is a perpetual project.  Who knows if there is an end date!!
Who me?

There is wonderful attention to detail around here – go figure!

Dad’s hard at work … remembering how “un-straight” and out of alignment and simply out of whack my home is … everywhere!

Choose Happy

Choose the happy way
and time won’t matter

I receive “messages from the universe” in my e-mail during the week.  This is what I woke up to today:

Sometimes the hard way is really the easy way, Dalon, and the slow way is really the quick way.
Yet such sublime surprises may remain forever unknown when one waits ... and waits ... for the quick and easy way to manifest.
Go!
The Universe

perspective … it’s all perspective, isn’t it?

Clear skies ahead

This is the view from my office as I type:

IMG_8937

Looks like a beautiful clear day here in Anchorage so far.  Amazing weather for an amazing part of the world.  Alaska at it’s finest!

……………………….

Things are moving along smoothly with the “remodel” that’s underway in the Gage Household.  I painted the back wall in the kitchen so I could get behind the oven since Dad had it pulled out.

IMG_8935

……………………….

There’s an interesting story … early on in this project, we realized that the fan over the stove didn’t vent outside.  Where did it vent?  Not totally sure.  Maybe it “re-circulated” the air.  Maybe.

Or, maybe not.

IMG_8931

Yes, you guessed it.  The fan didn’t vent anywhere!!  Well, it blew air to the bottom of the cabinet right above it.  REALLY???!!!  Look at the horrible wiring job … and the holes in the wall?  Yup.  Looks like original construction.

IMG_8933

I sure hope I don’t find out who did the electrical on this house when it was built.  They used the fan – yes the fan above the stove – as some kind of hub for the wiring … but didn’t insert a junction box.  They just threw the wires in the wall.

IMG_8932

Thank goodness for Dads!!!

……………………….

On Friday evening, a group gathered with me at the cemetery to christen Alan’s stone – the monument that was set in his honor.  It was a wonderful gathering – many jugs of Crown were passed around – yes, even amid the “alcohol prohibited” signs.  It had to be done.

crown

I keep thinking that it will be easier to go there now that the stone is set.

Really?
What am I saying???
It sucks.  It just sucks  Period.
All.The.Time.
There is nothing “easy” about going to this place.

Every day I am reminded that he isn’t with us any more.  Every morning when I wake, every time I look at the boys, every time I have to make a decision about our family, every time I walk in our closet, every time I go to garage, or grab a glass of ice or do laundry …

Part of me smiles and is happy that he is around always.  Then another part of me is pretty darn mad that I’m doing this by myself - he isn’t here doing this with me.

Time helps … as they say … I don’t know who “they” are, but I haven’t figured out yet if they’re right.

……………………….

It’s still going to be a good day.
The sky is clear and the sun will shine.
The boys will play and learn and grow.
And hopefully I will create something memorable …

Overheard in the morning

P:  Jarrett, when you sneak up on me with the orange bullets, I can see you.  If you have the yellow bullets, I can’t see you.  Can you give me the orange bullets?

J:  No Payton. The orange bullets came with my gun.  They’re mine. You can’t have them.

P:  I’m telling!

If you catch that conversation in the middle and you don’t realize that kids are talking, it’s kinda funny … who talks like that?!  Oh yea … MY boyz. Smile

………………………………….

Good things about right now:

my kids are healthy
my dad knows everything about fixing things
I can see the mountains from my office
there is food in the fridge
I got a shower
my friends are amazing!!

………………………………….

The blue sky is trying to peak out through the clouds today, but not much success, although it’s very bright outside.  It will be a nice setting for christening Alan’s stone this evening.

………………………………….

remember that we all just have this one day – this one moment – this one point in time to truly live – as Payton is learning in Tiger Cub Scouts, “do your best!”

Something to share

WOW!  New music … got this from another great blog friend em-il-ie!!! Smile

Kitchen Update:

IMG_8892

The ceiling is all enclosed and primer is on … time for a little texture (which, just for the record, I do not like, but it needs to blend in with the rest of the house).  Then paint!!  THEN I get my kitchen back.

………………………………………….

Bathroom Update:

IMG_8893

Ready for paint in this room … no texture.  Woohoo!!!  I still need to find just the right cabinet … always something to do.

…………………………………………

Garage Update:

Changes to the garage?  No.  I just can’t park in it for a while because of:

………………………………………

Remember that it does take effort to think about all the good things in our lives – you have to work at it.  What do you have to be thankful for?  What is really good about today?

When we think about all of our blessings and the good things in life, it reminds us that it’s silly to focus on the negative aspects around us.  Those also teach us lessons.  In the end it really is “all good”.

enjoy your day!!

This beautiful season

The beginning of each week starts a flurry of activity around here.  Basketball practice and even a cub scout meeting helped us initiate the first full week of October.

Last night found us at Flattop … my old “getaway” place … what a wonderful evening to spend there … this is what I saw from the bench where I was writing in my journal:

CIMG8984

As we begin another day, I want to share an interesting thought that I read about this morning in an e-mail.  The concept of treasures and what people value … what is life made up of anyway?

Time

Be careful how you spend yours … and recognize how valuable it truly is … enjoy your day!!

Keeping up with daily posts

In my effort to keep up with posting on the blog daily, I offer you the following update on the current construction project: mud and tape and mud and tape and more mud.

Smile

There are no photos for today.  There isn’t much news.  Much was accomplished in terms of mommy duties and work duties and all the other duties that I’m not quite sure how to categorize.

Watching Payton during basketball practice was fun.  I’m amazed that kids at this age can actually pay enough attention to begin to understand the game.  It’s great to see!  There are no Michael Jordan’s out on the court let me tell you, BUT there is hope.  And that’s where it all starts.

I look forward to another day tomorrow – a beautiful fall day in Alaska where the temperatures are cooling off, but the sun still shines and reminds us of life all around.

Enjoy your week!!

Thinking of Great Grandma

Today Great Grandma Clo would have been 92 years old.  I thought of her this morning … she was one of the first to send birthday cards to everyone in our family … she wrote notes to the boys and included stickers, gum, and various surprises … she even wrote long stories to each of the boys when they were born comparing her growing up to theirs and explaining the differences … truly an amazing woman.

Gma Clo 87 (2)

She is missed.

……………………

Both boys are playing basketball this year … I may have mentioned that already … and while Payton had his first practice last week, Jarrett just started this weekend.

IMG_8883

Yes, that is my child … the one to the far left of the photo away from all the rest of the group marching to his own beat … quite literally …

……………………

Things are still changing daily around here with the recent construction project slash renovation slash upgrade slash time for newness.  Some changes are hard to capture with the camera – with sheetrock comes mud and tape – and mud and tape – and then some more mud and tape.

I do have one picture that shows major change – we have no downstairs bathroom right now!

IMG_8891

Well, the toilet is still there, but no sink or counter and no door – that was removed to make it easier to unload the other unwanted pieces.  (It’s a good thing I have boys!)

……………………

Pondering …

Every day I wake up the same as I used to, and sometimes I feel guilty for that.

I wake up happy and thankful every day.

Because of the amazing parents and family and friends I have, I was raised and supported with a positive outlook and reminded that it’s up to me to decide each and every day what that day will bring … good or bad. It’s just the way it works.  Even when you don’t know which end is up, you still have a choice.

When my reality sinks in just a bit and I think about my responsibility of being a parent, and the list a mile long of things I should get done that day as well as what I would like to get done, I feel a little scared and lonely and unqualified.

Although I have tried to remind myself that the random emotions I have and feelings of concern about the future are “normal” for someone who has experienced what I have in life, I do still wonder what “normal” really is … what it means … and where do I go from here?

I know that we each have our own paths in life … some of us figure out our purpose sooner than others … and for some of us, our purpose can change.

This is where I am now … I am acknowledging that while I had a purpose and was headed in a certain direction, that has now changed.  Some parts of my previous path remain, however my future is headed in a different direction than I had planned.

Which direction might that be?  Hmm … well, when I know, I’ll share it.  But for now I’m trying to keep in mind that it’s up to me to decide how each day will be … good or bad.

and remember … everyone has a story … document your life!

Overheard

Jarrett just loves it when Grandpa Jim surprises us with some of his yummy treats.  Payton asked for a Lemon Meringue Pie a couple weeks ago … and of course Papaw obliged.  After having a piece yesterday, Jarrett said:

Grampa,
you da best pie-caker I evah seen!

IMG_1478

I just love that boy’s creative choice in words.

Beautiful Day

Yesterday, the last day of September,
was one of the most beautiful fall days
we’ve had this year …
in MY opinion.

After a morning appointment, Jarrett and I took a drive (truth be told, I drove and he just watched a movie in the back seat).  We headed south and went past Potter Marsh just a ways, then turned around and I took this photo at the marsh.  There were swans right at this very spot on our drive down, but I couldn’t find them on our return.

CIMG8970

This is the second photo I took of this view …
After I played with a few settings on the small camera I used,
it is the photo I liked the best.

We all know that winter is coming
regardless of our desire to witness it yet again.
This photo was taken near Elmore and Rabbit Creek.
A beautiful display of the powder creeping down the mountains.

CIMG8974

…………………………….

The kitchen looks different again.  This photo was taken just this morning and LOOK – no hole in the ceiling!

IMG_8876

Dad hung sheetrock yesterday (and I only helped hold it up while he put everything in place).  He also stayed for dinner last night.  No photos (darnit!), but we grilled on the back deck.  Steaks were good, but I think I’ll stick with meat from Costco instead of the local grocery stores.  Lesson learned.

…………………………….

Before I sign off, I’ll share something that made me smile yesterday … Jarrett quiet … something we don’t experience very often around these parts.

CIMG8978

enjoy your day! document your life Thumbs up
