Blog Update and Thoughts

parents

It was 44 years ago today that these two people married.  They created a family, and without them I would not be here OR have my children.

For this I am grateful.

We’ve had some crazy weather!  Schools were closed today because the roads were bad and the snow was so wet.  There was a bunch of it too!  I know we got almost a foot here at the house.  The kids had fun playing in it … I did quite a bit of shoveling. Smile

I have more to share and pics even, but it’s time for bed.  Enjoy your week and remember to be thankful!

It’s official … the color of the year for 2012 has been announced.

WARNING – spoiler below!

are you ready??????

The color for the year of 2012 is:

2012 color

Yes folks … that’s right.
It’s Tangerine Tango according to Pantone.

No I can sleep more soundly knowing this information.
I do happen to like the color … I’ll try to be less sarcastic …

Us …

The boys cooperated long enough for me to get a couple photos of us the other day … this is us … now … everyday photos … taken in the mirror … yes, the mirror in the bathroom …

Yes, it’s official …

I don’t like these winters.

The snow is so pretty when it’s coming down from the sky and blanketing my yard, the neighborhood, the town.  Shoveling has not been fun.  And I can’t lie – I am not enjoying winter as I once did.  But I do enjoy the beautiful landscape when snow covers everything.

When the temperature gets warm in the winter?  Not pretty.

CIMG9172

Yesterday it started raining in Anchorage.  You read that right, but I can say it again for you – it started raining in Anchorage.  This after quite a bit of snow the past month … about 3 to 4 inches of ice in the streets that we drive on.

What does that look like in Alaska in the winter you ask?
Let me show you …

CIMG9177

The above photo was taken today around 8 a.m. looking down our street.  How does one drive on streets like this?  Well, you don’t really drive … you just slide.  Simple.  Oh, and pray that you don’t slam into the neighbor’s car or living room.………………………………………………………………

So instead of running a few errands or visiting friends after church, we came home.  (Yes, we did make it to church today.  Once you get out of the neighborhoods, most streets are just wet with no ice.)  Little Man J is sleeping (an answered prayer) and Little Man P is playing with goo.

CIMG9179

I am in the office working on cleaning my desk … again.  For some reason the ability to maintain anything in my life is just not currently possible.  I’m sure the technology does exist, however I am currently unable to harness it.

Time for my own nap.
I’m thankful for Sunday afternoons.

Thought for Today

While it's often fashionable to dwell upon what might have been, what's usually overlooked is that really and truly, it couldn't have.  Because, invariably, any romanticized versions of how things "might have been," are based upon fictionalized versions of the past.

You see, most of the time when people think the present could have been different than it is, it's because they think the past was different than it was. Happily, the future can still be anything, when you surrender to the details (and who has to do what).

A Thankful Time

It was a weekend full of fun time with family and friends … a time to be thankful and remember all of the things we are blessed to experience in life.  Our weekend was a good one.  How about yours?

Payton lost another tooth!  Pulled it out by himself the other day – despite my offer to get it for him.

IMG_9067

Our Thanksgiving Day celebration was held at Grandma Lori’s this year.  It was a nice day spent with family and friends and of course wonderful food.  It was so nice of Grandma to host us this year – thanks Lori!!

CIMG9096

I didn’t get a photo of the table filled with food, but rest assured there was more than enough.  So much that we couldn’t fit it all on the table!  The kids sat at a separate table also.

We are blessed.

The boys got to stay the night at Grandma’s on Friday night as I had a scrap getaway.  My friend Michelle hosted an event called “AIW” or Album in a Weekend.  It was so much fun!  Of course there were choice beverages joining us:  coffee and Baileys as well as Tanqueray.  Oh, and did I forget chocolate?  No, actually I didn’t.  We had lots of that too. Smile

I plowed through all five of my kits and premade enough pages to fill an entire album.  I’ve decided this will be my “2012 Best of the Best” – I’ll put just the best photos in here from this coming year – 2012.  WOOHOO!  Just one more thing off my long list to do.

Here are a couple photos from this weekend:

Thanks to Michelle, Angela, Nicole and Tanya for a great weekend!  (Sorry I didn’t get to visit more Kelly!!)

Now it’s time to prepare some holiday notes to share with friends and family.  I skipped last year, but plan on sending out at least some photos this season.  Have you checked out all the fun cards available this year?  If not, take a look at these sites:

Home Updates and Snow Fun

I have my laundry room back after a few days of painting, building and flooring.  While I didn’t mind the break from washing clothes for days, it was sure nice to get caught up with all the dirty laundry created around this place.
Sarcastic smile
Here is what my area looks like now – there are a few more updates to be made in time, but what a change!

……………………………………………….

We woke up to about 6 inches of snow Sunday morning.  Auntie was visiting, and she suggested we all go outside to shovel the driveway.  (If it wasn’t for her, I would probably still have snow there because shoveling is NOT one of the things on my “favorite stuff to do” list!  Thanks Auntie …)

After church, we met up with friends and went sledding.  How fun was THAT?!  Fun I tell ya … bunches!!!

Here’s the group as I look to the top of the hill:

CIMG9071

Jarrett did a face plant when attempting a “run and jump” on the sled – sounds like a recurring theme for this boy …

Payton and buddy Logan loved the snow boarding – but not so much my taking photos …

Here’s to a fun day for you filled with experiencing joy in the small things for those little things are what life is truly made of!

SNOW!!!!!!!!!

We have beautiful SNOW in Anchor Town this morning!
I could tell it was lighter outside when I woke up around 7 a.m. – the light coming in through the top window of my bedroom told me there was something different.  I went to get my camera and tried not to wake the boys.  This is the best shot I could get first thing in the morning without any coffee running through my veins:

IMG_9015

After I took this shot, I went to get Payton out of bed.  He is SO excited!  Much more than I am … I’m not ready for the change in weather … and it hit me this morning that I’m also sad …

This is a reminder that there is another season that Alan is missing.  The first snow also brings the reminder of the holidays ahead.  Each season is wonderful and new and fun … but also difficult.

…………………………………………….

Quite a bit has happened since my last post.  A birthday, colder temperatures, and more home improvements just to start.

I have taken a few photos, but I missed a wonderful opportunity on Monday, October 17th when everything inside the house was taped off.  I brought the boys home from school and we could barely get in the house!  The guys were ready to paint (and paint everything – walls and ceilings), so we left, but not before I had dad cut me a hole to get in Payton’s room so I could grab his basketball gear for practice.  That would have been a great shot!  I was in too much of a hurry … darnit.

Here are a few photos taken just a couple days before the tape off and huge spray day:

IMG_8939

This is after paint and I’m starting to put things back together:

IMG_8994

I am so happy with all the work that’s been done!!  Dad is working on lots of little things right now, and I’m not ready to put stuff back up on the walls just yet … not sure what I want to put back up or where, so it can wait.  I think right now this is a perpetual project.  Who knows if there is an end date!!
Who me?

There is wonderful attention to detail around here – go figure!

IMG_9002 IMG_8999

Dad’s hard at work … remembering how “un-straight” and out of alignment and simply out of whack my home is … everywhere!

Choose Happy

Choose the happy way
and time won’t matter

I receive “messages from the universe” in my e-mail during the week.  This is what I woke up to today:

Sometimes the hard way is really the easy way, Dalon, and the slow way is really the quick way.
Yet such sublime surprises may remain forever unknown when one waits ... and waits ... for the quick and easy way to manifest.
Go!
The Universe

Clear skies ahead

This is the view from my office as I type:

IMG_8937

Looks like a beautiful clear day here in Anchorage so far.  Amazing weather for an amazing part of the world.  Alaska at it’s finest!

……………………….

Things are moving along smoothly with the “remodel” that’s underway in the Gage Household.  I painted the back wall in the kitchen so I could get behind the oven since Dad had it pulled out.

IMG_8935

……………………….

There’s an interesting story … early on in this project, we realized that the fan over the stove didn’t vent outside.  Where did it vent?  Not totally sure.  Maybe it “re-circulated” the air.  Maybe.

Or, maybe not.

IMG_8931

Yes, you guessed it.  The fan didn’t vent anywhere!!  Well, it blew air to the bottom of the cabinet right above it.  REALLY???!!!  Look at the horrible wiring job … and the holes in the wall?  Yup.  Looks like original construction.

IMG_8933

I sure hope I don’t find out who did the electrical on this house when it was built.  They used the fan – yes the fan above the stove – as some kind of hub for the wiring … but didn’t insert a junction box.  They just threw the wires in the wall.

IMG_8932

Thank goodness for Dads!!!

……………………….

On Friday evening, a group gathered with me at the cemetery to christen Alan’s stone – the monument that was set in his honor.  It was a wonderful gathering – many jugs of Crown were passed around – yes, even amid the “alcohol prohibited” signs.  It had to be done.

crown

I keep thinking that it will be easier to go there now that the stone is set.

Really?
What am I saying???
It sucks.  It just sucks  Period.
All.The.Time.
There is nothing “easy” about going to this place.

Every day I am reminded that he isn’t with us any more.  Every morning when I wake, every time I look at the boys, every time I have to make a decision about our family, every time I walk in our closet, every time I go to garage, or grab a glass of ice or do laundry …

Part of me smiles and is happy that he is around always.  Then another part of me is pretty darn mad that I’m doing this by myself - he isn’t here doing this with me.

Time helps … as they say … I don’t know who “they” are, but I haven’t figured out yet if they’re right.

……………………….

It’s still going to be a good day.
The sky is clear and the sun will shine.
The boys will play and learn and grow.
And hopefully I will create something memorable …

Overheard in the morning

P:  Jarrett, when you sneak up on me with the orange bullets, I can see you.  If you have the yellow bullets, I can’t see you.  Can you give me the orange bullets?

J:  No Payton. The orange bullets came with my gun.  They’re mine. You can’t have them.

P:  I’m telling!

If you catch that conversation in the middle and you don’t realize that kids are talking, it’s kinda funny … who talks like that?!  Oh yea … MY boyz. Smile

………………………………….

Good things about right now:

my kids are healthy
my dad knows everything about fixing things
I can see the mountains from my office
there is food in the fridge
I got a shower
my friends are amazing!!

………………………………….

The blue sky is trying to peak out through the clouds today, but not much success, although it’s very bright outside.  It will be a nice setting for christening Alan’s stone this evening.

………………………………….

remember that we all just have this one day – this one moment – this one point in time to truly live – as Payton is learning in Tiger Cub Scouts, “do your best!”

Things happening around our house today:

pork roast in the crock pot …
Jarrett saw a firetruck at school …
beautiful fall colors outside …
snow halfway down the mountains …
no commitments this evening …

………………………………

Ending the day on a very good note.
Kids are reading and playing somewhat quietly.
Dishes are done.
Laundry in process.
Tomorrow is another day of paint prep.

Something to share

WOW!  New music … got this from another great blog friend em-il-ie!!! Smile

Kitchen Update:

IMG_8892

The ceiling is all enclosed and primer is on … time for a little texture (which, just for the record, I do not like, but it needs to blend in with the rest of the house).  Then paint!!  THEN I get my kitchen back.

………………………………………….

Bathroom Update:

IMG_8893

Ready for paint in this room … no texture.  Woohoo!!!  I still need to find just the right cabinet … always something to do.

…………………………………………

Garage Update:

Changes to the garage?  No.  I just can’t park in it for a while because of:

IMG_8894

………………………………………

Remember that it does take effort to think about all the good things in our lives – you have to work at it.  What do you have to be thankful for?  What is really good about today?

When we think about all of our blessings and the good things in life, it reminds us that it’s silly to focus on the negative aspects around us.  Those also teach us lessons.  In the end it really is “all good”.

enjoy your day!!
